The Salina City Commission on Sept. 8 awarded a KDOT tree‑planting grant project to Landscape Consultants LLC of New Cambria, authorizing a contract of $209,345 plus a 10% contingency for a total not to exceed $230,279.50.
City Engineer Jim Kowach said the project, funded with a $250,000 Kansas Department of Transportation grant, will plant 570 Green Giant arborvitae (4–5 foot stock) in a single row at 8‑foot spacing along the northbound shoulder of I‑135 from Magnolia Road north to the railroad overpass. The trees will be planted at the toe of the back slope to maximize water availability and avoid buried utilities.
Kowach said the base contract covers planting, mulch, replacement of any trees that die during a two‑year establishment period and two pesticide treatments per year for bagworm control. The city will receive KDOT funding directly and no city funds are required for the project.
The planting season is October–November and staff asked for a prompt award so the contractor can order trees from out‑of‑state growers and plant within the available season. The commission approved the contract and contingency by voice vote, 5‑0.
