Salina commission approves $156,698 purchase and installation of alerting system for new Fire Station 4

The Salina City Commission on Sept. 8 authorized the city manager to purchase and install a Phoenix G2 fire station alerting system for the under‑construction Fire Station 4 at a combined cost of $156,698.13.
Shane Pearson, Salina fire chief, told the commission the request covers purchase from US Digital Designs (Honeywell) and installation by Precision Electric. He said Precision Electric remains the only authorized installer for the city’s system and that simultaneous installation during ongoing station construction reduces rework.
Chief Pearson said the department originally authorized station alerting upgrades for existing stations in 2022; the new purchase would match equipment currently in other stations. Battalion Chief Chris Stansbury said equipment in the old Station 4 will be salvaged for spare parts and kept in stock to reduce downtime if future failures occur.
Officials and firefighters told the commission the system has improved response times and reduced false wakeups; Pearson said the targeted tones and ramping light pattern help crews respond faster without being startled for every citywide call. The system also allows dispatchers to process a call and dispatch while still taking call information, Pearson said.
The city’s staff recommended authorizing the purchase and installation from the two vendors. The commission approved the request by voice vote, 5‑0.
