Louisa County officials say middle school project is about 92% complete and remain under budget

Louisa County Public Schools staff told the school board the district’s middle school renovation is roughly 91.96% complete and the project is on time and under budget.
A staff member who presented construction photos and figures said the district has spent $20,265,741.30, which represents 77.9% of the project budget, and that the contingency balance for the school additions is down to $12,000. “We are on time and under budget for that project,” the staff member said.
The presenter showed images of the Second Floor, saying flooring, paint and ceiling work are largely finished and that the auxiliary gym and cafeteria areas are visible from recent site photos. The presentation noted the First Floor was about two and a half weeks behind the Second Floor, and that the project team expects to continue closing that gap.
Site work updates included that concrete footings were about 70% complete and an aerial overlay of foundation drawings showed the project is well advanced. The presenter said the new parking area is in use and that the fire marshal conducted a courtesy visit. The CTE (career and technical education) building had no change orders at the time of the report, and the presenter said the crew planned to lay the first block for the CTE center the next day.
The staff member described a glass-enclosed staircase visible from the Second Floor and noted the district had discussed safety sightlines in the design. A field clarification described a yellow-colored on-site feature as groundwater retention — “not really a tank” — that allows stormwater to slowly leach into the soil rather than long-term storage.
Dr. Gregory, identified in the meeting transcript as speaking about the school year, praised staff, families and students for their early-year efforts: “We feel really positive about how the year started out,” he said, thanking the division’s staff members and community.
Board members did not take a separate vote on the construction figures during the presentation; the board moved from the presentation to its consent agenda afterward. The presenter characterized the overall status as ahead on schedule with limited unexpected changes to date, and indicated upcoming work would include installing ceiling tiles and finishing interior fit-out as the district prepares to open the renovated spaces.
Next steps mentioned in the presentation included continued interior finishes, the scheduled placement of the first block at the CTE center, and ongoing site work to complete the remaining footings and paving.
