The Bryan City Council on Aug. 18 voted to waive a local hearing on a liquor permit application from Saunders Theater Operation covering the movie theater and the adjacent former sound shop at 140–148 South Lynn.
City administration told the council the operator owns both properties and plans to present a local-option question to voters in November because the ward must approve certain sales on certain days. "This is something they're gonna put on the ballot for November, because that neighborhood, that ward, which I believe is Ward 2, has to approve certain sales on certain days for this to go forward," a staff presenter said. The presenter asked the council only to consider whether to hold a local hearing; the council granted the waiver by motion.
Staff explained the state will allow the two addresses to be treated as a combined area for a single liquor permit. A staff presenter said the applicants are in early planning stages, working on state-approved plans, bidding and contractors.
Council voted to waive the hearing with no recorded objections in the transcript; the meeting record shows the motion passed unanimously among members present.
