The Wareham School Committee considered and voted on a memorandum of agreement with Unit C of the Wareham Education Association on Aug. 21. Committee members praised negotiated salary increases and contract language but split over the contract’s two‑year term.
Joyce (School Committee member) said she supported the contract language and salary changes but opposed the two‑year duration, noting the district’s prior practice of three‑year agreements and concern it would require renegotiating sooner. Gavin (School Committee member) voiced similar concerns about duration, saying he preferred a three‑year term to secure longer‑range stability.
Other members, including April (School Committee member) and other negotiators, defended the agreement as the best deal they could secure and thanked negotiators and union members for their work.
The committee called for the superintendent to inform the Wareham Education Association of the vote and to reconvene for next steps. The numerical result announced at the meeting was “2, 3, 0,” and the superintendent was asked to notify the union and coordinate follow‑up discussions.
There was no further formal action at the meeting beyond staff direction to report back and continue negotiations.
