The Metropolitan Council on Aug. 27 authorized the suspension of Northstar commuter rail service within the seven-county metropolitan area and approved enhanced bus service in the North Star Corridor as part of the council’s Network Now reconfiguration.
Council Member Barber, presenting business item 2025-178, said the change responds to a long-term shift in downtown commuter travel since March 2020 and that Metro Transit will provide more flexible bus service, including rush-hour and all-day service, in the corridor. "Therefore, mister chair, I move that the Metropolitan Council authorize the suspension of North Star commuter rail service pursuant to all applicable contracts, agreements, easements, and licenses, and approves the enhanced bus service serving the North Star Corridor within the 7 Metro County metropolitan area to be incorporated in network now," Barber said.
Barber acknowledged the decision was difficult and noted the transportation committee heard testimony from five riders and employees opposing the suspension. Council members said staff analyzed alternatives and outreach; supporters described the action as a way to reduce operating subsidy and provide more efficient and flexible service.
After a motion and second, the council approved the suspension by voice vote. The motion directs staff to implement the suspension consistent with contract and agreement terms and to incorporate enhanced bus service in the council’s Network Now plan. The motion referenced coordination with contract, easement and license terms; specific implementation steps and timing will follow staff work and contract requirements.
