Staff member, South Colonie Central School District, ran a random lottery on the district’s driver and traffic safety education registrations and announced the order of acceptance and a wait list for Colonie Central High School’s upcoming session.
The lottery determined which registrants will be offered available seats and which will be placed on a wait list. "Students must be at least 16 years old by the start of the session. Students must also hold a valid New York State learner permit before beginning in car instruction. Proof of a valid learner permit will be required," the staff member said.
The district said each registrant had been assigned a lottery number and that numbers would be drawn at random to determine placement. The staff member read the drawn numbers in order: 8, 14, 11, 1, 10, 13, 4, 16, 6, 19, 3, 17, 15, 18, 12, 9. The district announced the following wait-list numbers: 2, 7, 5. The staff member said students will be notified by email of their lottery number, placement status, and any next steps.
The district did not specify how many seats were available in the session or the session start date. The staff member noted that seats may open if selected students do not meet eligibility requirements or are unable to participate. The procedure described was administrative: the lottery was used to fill seats in the program and to create a wait list; there was no vote or policy change recorded in the meeting record.
Parents and students who registered should watch for an email from the district with their placement and further instructions, including how and when to submit proof of a valid New York State learner permit.
