The South Colonie Central School District board on Aug. 26 approved revisions to policy 53‑10 that align with a state directive requiring mobile devices for students in UPK through grade 12 to be secured during instructional hours.
Policy committee chair Christopher Larrabee told the board the change stems from a state mandate and urged parents to review the revised policy; he said the policy packet has been sent to families through ParentSquare. “It has been sent out multiple times to parents. Please take a look at it so they're aware,” Larrabee said.
The board acted on the policy committee’s recommendation and approved the revisions as presented. The motion to approve the policy revisions was made by Larrabee and carried 7–0.
Board members and staff said the policy packet and plain‑language summary were distributed to families and that schools will communicate details at the building level. The board did not discuss enforcement details during the meeting; implementation steps, such as locker procedures and school‑level operational guidance, will be addressed by building staff and administrators.
