The Auburn School Committee on Aug. 20 approved updated language for all preK–12 student handbooks that clarifies dress-code standards and outlines a process for families who seek accommodations related to curriculum content.
The committee approved a dress-code paragraph, recommended by counsel, prohibiting clothing that "violates reasonable standards of health, safety, or cleanliness" or that "is reasonably likely to cause disruption to the school and/or the educational process." The language will be inserted into every preK–12 handbook.
Committee members also discussed guidance from the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) following a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision referenced in the meeting. As presented, the recommended handbook language states that the Auburn Public Schools "encourages respect for the human and civil rights of all individuals" and that "families may request information from the building principal on available accommodations related to curriculum content." The presenter said the recommendation aligns with Massachusetts regulation 603 CMR 26.05, section 1, and with district practice of reviewing accommodation requests with central office staff and counsel.
During questions, a committee member asked whether a family could "opt out" of materials broadly. The presenter described a recommended procedure: the teacher refers a concern to the principal, who consults with central office staff (including appropriate directors) and counsel to assess whether an alternative assignment is appropriate. The meeting record shows the committee discussed the potential range of classroom situations and stressed the need for centralized review before any alternative assignment is offered.
The committee approved the handbook updates by voice vote. Meeting participants said the revised language and the described process reflect MASC advisories and counsel recommendations; the district will post the revised language with the committee packet on the school website.
