Spelling bee winner, state athletes and Star 3 students honored; board accepts multiple small gifts

The district announced that eighth-grader Madison Watts of Trinity Middle School won the district spelling bee and advanced to the regional spelling bee on March 9 at Bank of America Stadium; the winner may advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May if she advances from regionals. The board also recognized numerous student athletes who placed first through fourth at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in indoor track and wrestling, listing individual placers and state titles by school.
The board presented Star 3 awards — recognizing students who are respectful, responsible and ‘‘doing the right thing’’ — for March. Dozens of students from elementary, middle and high schools were named in the meeting record; the program sponsor Wayne Thomas Chevrolet will provide flags for the Star 3 recognition events.
Separately, the superintendent reported acceptance of several gift donations under board policy for items valued at $5,000 or less. Examples the packet listed include: $1,000 from Industrial Wood Products to Frank Bell Miller School for Career Connections, $500 from Randolph Media College, $250 from North Carolina Custom Modulars and several other $100–$500 donations for Cardinal Career Connections events, two park-style benches valued at $150 each donated to Ramon Elementary School, and a $2,500 spirit rock donation to Randleman Middle School from Sandman Construction and Martin Marietta. The district accepted the gifts on the superintendent’s behalf and recorded them as information items.
