Summer reading camp enrollment, proficiency gains reported; district to return $33,345.85 to state

Dr. Ashley Barr, a staff member for the Randolph County School System, summarized results from the district’s 2025 summer reading camp, which ran June 16 through July 2 at Randleman, Ramsdale, Southmont and Trinity elementary schools. "Across those 4 sites, we had a total enrollment of 345 students," Dr. Barr said, and she described participation by grade: 146 second graders and 199 third graders.
Dr. Barr reported assessment results for third graders: 150 took the in‑class summer benchmark and 32 of those reached proficiency (21%). A separate assessment — described in the packet as a third‑party “3 to achieve” test — was taken by 101 students, of whom 13 achieved proficiency. After adjusting for good‑cause exemptions, the district said 27 additional students reached proficiency as a result of the camp.
At the start of the presentation a board member noted the district would return $33,345.85 to the state; another board member and staff discussed that state funding for the program had dipped during the pandemic and the district has been working to rebuild participation and outcomes. The presentation was informational; no policy or funding vote was taken.
