Residents report encampment cleanup, worry over homeless census; new church announces community reading program

At the Jan. 30 Sunrise Manor meeting two residents used general public comment to report neighborhood efforts to address encampments and to announce a community program.
Al Rojas of Homestead Court told the board that Metro and code enforcement had helped clear a homeless encampment on Hollywood and Shasta. He said neighborhood watch captains have worked with Metro and that property owners may add trespass signs or boulders to deter camping. "We cleared up the other side of Lake Mead," Rojas said, and asked that the board consider physical measures such as boulders where encampments recur.
Rojas also said a new Christian church in the area plans to run reading programs and book drives focused on children. He invited board members to attend.
Earl Barbot said he was concerned the annual homeless census would not be conducted this year and that skipping the count could jeopardize funding for services. "They're not gonna do the census this year. Very dangerous. Disgraceful," Barbot said.
Board members did not take action on the public comments; the comments were entered for the record under the general-public-comment agenda item.
