Paradise board approves replacement sign for Motel 6; applicant to explore Neon Museum salvage

The Paradise Advisory Board approved design review for a new freestanding sign at the Motel 6 property on Tropicana Avenue and Cobble Lane, allowing a modern digital message cabinet at roughly the existing sign footprint. The current sign dates to 1988 and applicants said structural and code changes require building a new support rather than retrofitting the old assembly.
Jake Posmer of Hartlauer Signs said the motel’s existing sign used neon animation and that the proposed digital cabinet will replicate animated messaging in a new, structurally compliant form. Hearing members asked whether neon elements could be preserved; Posmer said his firm has worked on Neon Museum projects and would pursue salvaging and donating elements to the Neon Museum if the customer agrees and the sign can be removed intact.
A public commenter said the historic neon sign is iconic and expressed disappointment at replacing it with a simpler pole‑mounted cabinet; another commissioner expressed a similar view but said the concern alone was not sufficient to deny the application. The board approved the design review with preliminary staff conditions.
