Platte County Commission on Aug. 11 approved a change order with Straub Construction to address additional work discovered during ongoing courthouse renovations, County Administrator Wes Medgar said at a short special meeting.
Medgar told commissioners the item is “change order number 4 for our courthouse improvement project with Straub Construction.” He described “about 15 or so additional, changes” discovered while renovating the second floor of the county’s original 1860s courthouse and said the project team is using the opportunity to bring systems “to code the way they should be.”
The change order covers a set of upgrades Medgar enumerated, including replacement of second‑floor ceiling and lighting, restoration of an original 10‑foot ceiling and associated trim in the new Division 6 courtroom, installation of a suspended ceiling tile with an exposed outer perimeter to reveal historic elements, and additional furniture to support the public administrator’s move to the third floor.
Commissioner (unnamed) moved to approve the item, identified on the agenda as 2025CO011ARPA (change order number 4 with Straub Construction); Commissioner Danaher seconded. The motion passed on a recorded roll call vote of 3-0.
Medgar said the uncovered historic elements appeared to be in good condition and that restoration will preserve the courthouse’s architectural appearance while completing necessary safety and functional upgrades. The meeting record does not specify a dollar amount for change order number 4; the agenda lists the project as funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
