Woodbridge marks Autism Acceptance Month; police vehicles to display student-designed magnets

Councilman Greg Ficara opened the Woodbridge Township flag-raising ceremony for World Autism Acceptance Month, introducing members of the council and school and police officials who attended. The event included a proclamation recognizing the month’s theme, “Celebrate differences,” and noted that the flag will be flown for the month.
Vice President Sue Borden of the Board of Education said she was honored to represent the school community at the ceremony and thanked township officials for supporting the annual observance.
Detective Michael Harris, who oversees community affairs for the Woodbridge Police Department, described a new police-community outreach item: hand-designed magnets that will be placed on police vehicles for the next 30 days. Harris said the artwork was created by a student and that the department also will wear puzzle-print patches on outer vests; proceeds from patch sales will be donated to POAC and distributed at a POAC walk scheduled for June 8.
The student designer, Gabrielle, a seventh grader, was invited forward, presented with a plaque and introduced briefly; Gabrielle described spending time researching and revising the design before submitting it for production. Fast Signs (Avenel) produced the vehicle magnets on short notice, according to Harris.
Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin also addressed the gathering to congratulate the student and commend the township for recognizing autism acceptance.
The ceremony concluded with a group photo and the scheduled flag raising.
