The Spring Valley Town Board on Aug. 26 opened a public solicitation of suggestions for the fiscal‑year 2027 county budget and heard multiple residents ask that the town prioritize traffic‑safety improvements near schools and neighborhood intersections.
The discussion matters because the town board compiles a community “wish list” that staff delivers to county departments — public works, parks and recreation and others — which can lead to items being built into departmental budget proposals to the Board of County Commissioners.
Mike, a town staff member, explained the process: “What happens then is that if it is a public works item, I meet with the director of public works, let them know that the board has made this request. If it's a parks and rec item, I meet with the director of parks and rec... then we try to get them to incorporate that into their budget.”
Residents suggested several traffic and pedestrian safety priorities. One resident asked for painted or otherwise more conspicuous stop markings and said the intersections at Twain and Beechwood and Mountain Moss and Beechwood were problematic. Another resident asked the board to consider a crosswalk on Cherokee at Grand Canyon, noting children walk there to Hayes Elementary and that a crossing guard might be needed during school hours: “Maybe they can put a crosswalk on Cherokee,” the resident said.
The board reviewed examples of prior successful requests to illustrate the process. Mike noted two items the town requested last year — continued funding for the county’s Click It Fix It reporting process and road work along Jones Boulevard in the Tropicana‑to‑215 segment — were incorporated into departmental plans and completed. That history was presented as a rationale for bringing up specific, location‑based requests now.
Board members asked residents to document specific locations and to bring written requests or supporting notes to the next town meeting. Christina (county staff) is expected to attend the next meeting to hear compiled suggestions from the town board. The board plans to keep a running list of requests, open the item for further public comment at the next meeting and then finalize recommendations to send to county departments before the county budget cycle.
Less critical details: board recruitment was briefly mentioned; members asked residents to identify neighbors who might want to join the town board. The next town board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9.
