District officials report smooth start to cell-phone pouch policy; minor equipment damage noted

District officials told the Board on Sept. 8 that the first three days of the new cell-phone pouch policy have gone smoothly at schools using the pouches, with teachers reporting improved engagement.
"Students themselves have shared that they recognize the benefit, for their learning. Teachers are reporting that students are more engaged in conversation with each other, more attentive, and more focused, during class time," said Dr. Ward (school official), summarizing building reports from Roxborough Road Middle School and CNS during the board update.
Dr. Ward said staff brought all employees together before the school year and that staff completed a survey in which words that rose to the top included “together,” “building,” “support,” “community,” and “connections.” She said Deb Ayers would give a midpoint update on the utilization study at the October board meeting.
Bridget (staff member) reported early equipment problems but said the issues have been limited. “The only real issue I've seen... the pin broke,” she said, describing one pouch pin that failed and was repaired.
Board members thanked staff for implementation effort and said they look forward to reports in a few months on how instruction and student behavior compare with last year. No policy changes were proposed during the meeting.
