BOE hears facilities update: high school auditorium, pool, Lakeshore Elementary on schedule

District facilities staff and the district architect updated the Board on high school Phase 2 renovations (auditorium, gym, lobby, locker rooms), new tennis courts, pool foundations, Lakeshore Elementary progress, upcoming safety/security and Gillette Road work, and a five-year building condition survey and utilization study.
At the Sept. 8 meeting the Board of Education received a facilities update from Matt Erwin, the district facilities director, and Kirk Norberg, the district architect with King and King Architects, with construction management updates from Bob Bufio of Watchdog.
"For those of you, at home that are new to the district or, not familiar with our faces, I'm Matt Erwin. I'm the director of facilities," Erwin said, and reviewed completed and ongoing capital work at the high school. He reported that Phase 2 — renovations to the gym, lobby, auditorium and locker rooms — is largely finished aside from punch-list items and minor trim work. Erwin said the new backlit logo, new seating, carpet and lighting are in place and that crews will finish detail work over the next month.
Kirk Norberg described the auditorium fly tower work as “an amazing architectural and engineering feat,” saying the rebuilt fly tower provides sufficient space for staging events. Erwin and Norberg also showed photos of new specialty locker spaces and a new flex space for lighter workouts.
Erwin said the district’s new tennis courts are ready and will open after windscreens are installed in spring. On the pool project he said foundations are complete and “steel should be here in early October” so erection can begin; a presenter asked for confirmation about a large steel member described as “14 foot high” and “approximately 128 feet” long. Lakeshore Elementary is progressing with mechanicals and drywall in place; windows and doors installation will make the building weather-tight and Erwin said he expects completion in January.
Looking ahead, Erwin said finalized contracts are in place for the pool, and the district anticipates starting safety and security work and Gillette Road renovations in spring with phasing over the next two years. He also said engineers are conducting a five-year Building Condition Survey (a State of New York requirement) while a parallel utilization study led by Deb Ayers and John Wazniewski is working with about 30 community members and expects to finish in December. Erwin encouraged community members to review the utilization study materials on the district website and to provide input to committee members.
Board members thanked staff and contractors for progress and noted the multi-year nature of capital projects; no formal action was taken on capital projects during the update.
