United Independent School District's risk management and wellness staff presented an overview of the district's employee wellness program at a June workshop, reporting increased participation in biometric screenings, walking challenges and wellness events and providing utilization figures for an employee mental-health partner.
Why it matters: employee wellness initiatives can affect staff health outcomes, absenteeism and benefits utilization and are part of the district's efforts to support staff ahead of the new school year.
Director of Risk Management Alfredo Dominguez introduced Wellness Program Coordinator Cori Saravia, who said participation has grown in three years and described program components: on-site biometric screenings offered at about 60 locations, a Be Well walking app and year-round campus challenges funded through Blue Cross Blue Shield reimbursements for wellness incentives.
Saravia said about 1,000 employees participate in on-site biometric screens and that the district's new 12-week Wonder Health weight-loss program runs with short weekly lessons and incentives. She said the district hosts campus-level competitions and uses funds reimbursed by the carrier to buy wellness-related items for campuses. "Up to date, we've probably given out about 800 different incentives," Saravia said.
On mental-health services, Saravia provided figures from the district's partner (named in the presentation) showing 339 sessions and 20 presentations between November 2024 and May. Dominguez said the program includes wellness champions at each campus who help promote events and that the district received gold-level recognition from the American Heart Association workforce scorecard for the third consecutive year.
Ending: staff said the program will continue through the summer and into 2025-26 and asked trustees to support ongoing outreach, data collection and campus-level initiatives to sustain participation and benefits.
