United Independent School District trustees on the evening of the board’s March 2025 regular meeting approved a series of motions including contingent-fee legal agreements to join multi-district litigation about social media’s effects on students, budget amendments that reallocated district funds, acceptance of several donations, and the retention of a consultant to analyze a possible sale of a 165‑acre parcel. One item — updated UIC board operating procedures — was tabled for a future meeting.
Board counsel and staff told trustees the contingent-fee legal agreements would impose no up-front cost on the district. “There is no cost at all. 0 cost to the district to join this multidistrict litigation,” a staff member said during open session. Trustees voted to adopt the resolution approving submission of the contingent-fee agreement for expedited review and to enter into contingent-fee agreements with the identified law firms.
The board approved the consent agenda with item 6.e (budget amendments) pulled for discussion and later approved that item after questions about how the district would apply reserved funds. Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Amalisa explained the budget amendment includes about a $4 million increase tied to instructional programs and instructional workbooks that had been planned for the year and were already embedded in the district’s scope and sequence.
Trustees also approved acceptance of donations listed in the agenda (including monetary donations to athletics and campus needs and an in‑kind mentorship donation). They approved nominations for Region 1 Education Center places 3 and 6 and granted requests to reallocate previously approved trustees’ discretionary funds for several campuses.
On legal matters the board authorized counsel to proceed in a pending suit involving Potential Holdings LLC and approved a contingent tax‑exemption settlement agreement with CPS Energy contingent on specified conditions. The board authorized retention of KCI to perform an analysis related to the possible sale of the 165‑acre tract near La Ciena Road and Rancho Penitas Road.
The board voted to table updated UIC board operating procedures and then adjourned the meeting.
