Teresa Spies, executive director of the American Heart Association’s San Antonio office, presented a CPR-in-schools kit to Southwest ISD and thanked the district for adopting the AHA Kids Heart Challenge curriculum.

Spies told the board the association’s curriculum helps students learn CPR and cardiovascular prevention. "We know with the American Heart Association that 80 percent of heart disease risk factors can be prevented," she said, and she noted that "CPR is now a requirement for graduation in the state of Texas." She described a CPR kit funded by the SWBC Foundation and urged the district to make broad use of it rather than leaving it stored.
The presentation was made during the public comment portion of the meeting; no formal board action was required to accept the kit. Spies encouraged continued partnership between the district and the association on prevention and lifesaving training.
