The Sherman ISD Board of Trustees approved an agreement with Franklin Covey to implement the Leader in Me program at additional campuses, a program administrators said is intended to build student leadership, culture and common student experiences across elementary schools.
Administrators told the board the district has secured a $152,000 grant to help offset initial costs and reported that multiple community partners have offered support. District staff said the agreement preserves existing stipend levels in the near term and that principals will be asked to align Leader in Me implementation with the district's strategic plan and to prepare scope-and-sequence, coaching and professional-development plans.
Board members discussed the importance of campus-level ownership, teacher buy-in and implementing the program with fidelity. One trustee urged caution about imposing the program on campuses that do not demonstrate local buy-in in year one, saying a campus without committed site leadership risks implementing the program only superficially.
Administrators described implementation steps including principal briefings, instructional rounds at a pilot campus (SOAR) and an upcoming leadership summit for principals focused on family and community engagement and operational planning. They said minimum program components will be required, but principals will have flexibility to tailor the program to campus needs.
A motion to approve the agreement passed by voice vote. Trustees also thanked SOAR staff and principals who championed the program at pilot sites and said they look forward to regular updates on rollout and community partnerships.
Administrators will return with implementation schedules and detailed cost and coaching plans for board review.
