Sherman ISD reports construction progress at three new elementaries; helicopter sets rooftop HVAC units

Brandon Kipp, a district capital projects representative, briefed the board on construction progress for multiple Sherman ISD facilities, saying the three replacement/new elementary projects are all north of 50 percent complete and crews recently used helicopters to place rooftop heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units.

"We're making good progress and they're doing a great job despite even having a couple of snow days," Kipp said, summarizing work at Crutchfield and Fairview elementaries and the new elementary at Heritage Ranch.

Kipp described visible project milestones: roofing in place, exterior brickwork underway, interior sheetrocking, and poured decks for planned additions. He said the gym in one school will double as a storm shelter and that the design includes a media center with curtain-wall windows and outdoor learning courtyards. Contractors scheduled helicopter lifts to set mechanical units atop Crutchfield and Fairview; Kipp said a lift for Heritage Ranch was planned in the coming weeks.

Dr. O'Neill and other staff also updated the board on the facilities naming process. The district reopened a submission window through Jan. 24 for additional naming nominations; those names will be vetted by the facilities naming committee with a plan to present recommendations to the board in February. Nominations on file include longtime educators and community leaders; the committee will review combined nominations and present findings.

The board was also told Sherman ISD received more than $8,000 in recent donations. District officials thanked Spark Flight for a donation supporting elementary robotics and STEM programs and Bank of Texas for funding picnic tables and an outdoor learning space at Scribe Elementary. The local nonprofit Project Generosity was recognized for providing shoes, backpacks and holiday sponsorships to students; officials cited donation totals and in-kind support provided since 2022.
