Board approves concussion oversight team to develop return-to-play protocol

The San Felipe del Oro CISD Board of Trustees on Aug. 18 approved a concussion oversight team to establish the district’s return-to-play protocol for student-athletes, complying with Education Code §38.153.
Frenchie McCray Junior presented the statutory requirement and the proposed team membership. McCray cited the law’s requirement that each district have a concussion oversight team responsible for developing return-to-play protocols based on peer-reviewed scientific evidence and that the team include at least one physician and, to the greatest extent practicable, other licensed healthcare professionals such as an athletic trainer, advanced practice nurse, neuropsychologist or physician assistant.
The recommended team members presented to the board were Antonio Cadena, Concice Benicki, Melissa Padilla Limon, Brad Dixon, Alyssa Price and Liana Escoreno. The administration recommended board approval of the team; the trustees approved the recommendation with no recorded opposition.
Why it matters: the concussion oversight team creates the district’s medically informed process for when students may resume athletic practice or competition after a suspected concussion. State law requires board approval of the team and its return-to-play protocol.
