Haywood County Library marks National Library Week and highlights new services

Kathy Vosler, director of Haywood County Public Library, and Community Engagement Librarian Zachary Jones presented to the Board of Commissioners on April 7 to mark National Library Week and to summarize recent library initiatives.

Vosler listed new and expanded services: a "Friends of the Library" loyalty card tied to the Friends' used bookshop, the Creativebug online resource (1,000+ video tutorials for makers and crafters), expanded notary services at Waynesville and Canton (about 150 notary services provided since May 2023), and Stay Sharp memory kits designed for people experiencing cognitive decline; the kits will circulate starting in May.

The library also purchased a commercial book-cover repair machine (about $1,400) that has repaired more than 700 library books in the past year to extend collection life. Vosler reported success with the Fines Creek book locker (10-unit locker installed in December; 68 pickups totaling 281 books since installation). Zachary Jones summarized National Library Week programming including story times, a bookmark contest and other outreach events.

Commissioners asked about scheduling for notary services, and Vosler said patrons should call ahead and that Waynesville has two notaries while Canton has one. Members praised the library's community-centered services and its staff contributions during recent storm response.

Ending: Commissioners and library staff discussed grant applications for additional meeting spaces and ongoing community programming; the board thanked library staff and trustees for their work.
