Duplin elections board to close two precincts; county will notify affected voters

Angela B. Maynor, chair of the Duplin County Board of Elections, told the Duplin County Board of Commissioners on May 19 that the county will close two precincts, reducing the total from 19 to 17, following state board approval.
Maynor said the county board voted earlier this year to close the Lockland and Rockfish precincts and that the State Board of Elections approved the change about two weeks before the May 19 meeting. She told commissioners the closures were recommended because Rockfish lies about a mile from the Wallace precinct and Lockland is roughly two miles away, and both sites had low turnout.
"Instead of having 19 precincts now, we will now have 17. We're closing Lockland, and we're closing Rockfish," Maynor said.
Maynor described how the county will notify voters: affected citizens will be mailed letters (sent twice), information will be posted on the Duplin County website and published in the newspaper. She said the moves will reduce costs and make better use of limited election staffing.
The announcement did not record a new formal vote during the May 19 commission meeting; Maynor said the board of elections had already approved the change in March and the state approved it subsequently. No commissioner motion or county-level vote on the closures was taken at the May 19 meeting.
Maynor identified herself in the meeting as the chairman of the board of elections and said she would provide additional information and answer questions from the commission if requested.
