Duplin presents Governor’s Volunteer Service awards; local tax-aid volunteers recognized

Duplin County commissioners used part of their May 5 meeting to present the 2025 Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards and to recognize a long-running local tax-preparation volunteer team.
Melissa Brown introduced the awards program and said each county may submit up to 10 nominations and one medallion candidate for state recognition. The board recognized Gregory Carr of Rose Hill, who Brown said will receive a 2025 Governor’s medallion in Raleigh on May 12 for his volunteer work in disaster preparedness, response and recovery and for long service as a volunteer firefighter. Brown said Carr volunteered more than 700 hours in the past year.
“Just thankful to God for being here and for putting on my heart to do the things that I do,” Gregory Carr said when given a chance to speak. Commissioners congratulated him and took photographs.
The board also honored the Duplin County Tax Aid Volunteers as a group. Brown said the program — started in 1995 — prepared and e-filed federal and North Carolina returns for about 250 individuals or couples in 2024 and saved taxpayers roughly $50,000 in preparation fees by offering the service free of charge. Brown said nine volunteers contributed 1,009 hours in 2024 and the team recorded 993 volunteer hours in January–April 2025 after adding three volunteers.
Commissioners thanked the volunteers and said the county will display recognition certificates at the new senior center. No formal board action was required for the recognitions.
