Jackson County notifies Swain County of intent to withdraw from Fontana Regional Library system

The letter, signed by the Jackson County chair, stated that Jackson County would meet all applicable funding, operational and reporting obligations through the end of the fiscal year and committed to an orderly transition. The notice said it was provided in compliance with a July 1 statutory deadline and that the county had notified the FRL board, Macon County, Swain County and the State Library of North Carolina.
The county manager said Swain and Macon counties will engage in follow-up planning and that multiple stakeholders will work through the operational and funding implications during the coming year. The manager did not present a detailed timeline for library services or funding changes beyond the withdrawal effective date provided in the letter.
Commissioners did not take immediate action at the work session; staff said they would update the board as planning proceeds.
