County manager says Swain County exploring GPS and in-vehicle cameras; body cams under review

Swain County’s manager reported on July 1, 2025, that the county is working with Verizon Wireless to install GPS tracking devices on county vehicles and is evaluating in-vehicle camera options and possible body-worn cameras for select departments.
The manager said Verizon technicians would install GPS units and grant access to the county; the county expects installations over the next month or two and will evaluate camera costs for both inside/outside vehicle views. The manager said the county would seek grants to offset costs and that a budget amendment might be necessary depending on final prices.
Commissioners discussed fleet maintenance and vehicle-warranty recordkeeping in the same general conversation: staff noted finance maintains a running spreadsheet for vehicle service and receipts and that GPS mileage reporting could be used to generate maintenance reminders and notifications to ensure routine service.
