Commissioners appoint interim elections official to jury commission seat

The Swain County Board of Commissioners voted Sept. 2 to appoint Jana Hyatt to the seat on the county jury commission that the board fills. County staff explained the jury commission is a three-member body (one appointed by a superior court judge, one by the clerk of court, and one by the board of commissioners) that prepares the master jury list using voter registration and driver's license records.
County staff explained that Adam Burns, the director of elections, had resigned his position and that Jana Hyatt was serving as interim director of elections. Staff told the board that appointing an elections-office representative to the jury commission has been the customary practice because the commission uses voter-registration lists.
"They do not have to be the director yet," staff said, noting that an appointee can serve before being confirmed in a permanent elections position. A commissioner moved to appoint Jana Hyatt to finish the current two-year term; the board seconded the motion and voted in favor. The board also noted that any permanent appointment may require state Board of Elections approval under state processes.
Staff said they would notify the clerk and coordinate any paperwork required by the state office.
