The Family Resource Center told the county commissioners on Aug. 5 it provided wraparound services to 266 families (719 individuals) in the past year, combining basic-needs assistance, rent help, power and food aid and crisis management. The center’s presenter reported 54 families completed evidence-based parent-education programs, case management was provided to 102 families, and staff and volunteers made about 1,100 referrals. The presenter said the center brought in "$302,100 in grants that went directly to assist citizens in Swain County through these services" and that the center completed national and state accreditation this year. The center said it operates with four employees, a part-time employee and 15 volunteers and ran holiday-assistance programs serving about 512 families. The presenter noted that post-hurricane donations distributed countywide and to short-term residents were not included in the report’s counts for Swain County residents. Commissioners did not take formal action; the presentation served as an informational department-head report.
