Princeton commission tables 600 Mercer Road resolution to Sept. 15 after last‑minute edits and quorum concerns

The Princeton Historic Preservation Commission on Aug. 18 decided to table a resolution concerning 600 Mercer Road until its next meeting on Sept. 15 after a last‑minute edit request by the applicant’s attorney and concerns about participation and timing.

Why it matters: Commissioners said the requested change — adding “school campus” to a sentence describing adjacent properties — was minor but deserving of broader review because not all voting members were present or eligible to vote that night.

At the start of the evening’s business, an applicant attorney asked the commission to make a single textual adjustment in the proposed resolution: to add “school campus” when identifying properties adjacent to the site. Chairperson Julie Capizzoli explained several members were not eligible to vote that night (including alternates and a commissioner who recused himself), and at times members raised uncertainty about whether the commission had a sufficient quorum to approve the resolution after the edits.

Commissioner Elrick indicated he was prepared to move forward but other members, including staff and legal counsel, recommended tabling. Legal counsel advised the commission that revising a resolution “the night of the meeting” was not advisable without prior review and suggested the matter be carried to the next month. The commission agreed and formally tabled the resolution; staff recorded the continuance to the Sept. 15 meeting.

Discussion vs. decision: The item involved both discussion — over the wording change and whether the limited body could vote — and the formal decision to table the matter to allow fuller membership participation and review. No substantive change to the project was adopted at the meeting.

Next steps: The resolution for 600 Mercer Road will return on Sept. 15 for further consideration with the applicant’s requested wording and with a fuller membership present for a formal vote.
