Parents urge adjustments to phone pouch access, camera ban and student treatment at Red Oak schools

Christy Kelso, a Joy Shaw Middle School parent, said Joy Shaw students were repeatedly crossing between CTE areas and the sixth-grade center and that short passing times force students to run and risk tardies. Kelso also asked the district to add more Yondr phone-pouch stations so students can unlock pouches when leaving campus and avoid missing buses.
Laura Cheek described concerns at Red Oak High School, saying students are being "spoken to like they are criminals," and cited incidents she characterized as humiliating, including an assistant principal grabbing a student's arm to check a belt and a student told a bra triggered a metal detector. Cheek also said a new rule banning cameras inside the high school was not communicated to parents or included in the student handbook or code of conduct and asked why the unwritten rule existed.
The board read its public-comment script before the speakers and reminded callers that public comment is opinion and that the board may not act on items not posted on the agenda. No formal action or board response resolving the complaints was recorded on the meeting record; trustees thanked speakers and moved to the consent agenda.
