Mesquite ISD board approves three administrative hires, renews teacher contracts

The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve three administrative appointments — a school principal, a director of communications and an assistant director of food services — and approved probationary and term contract renewals for certificated staff.
The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees on April 14 unanimously approved three administrative hires and renewed probationary and term contracts for teachers, facilitators, nurses and librarians.
The board voted 6-0 to approve the hires after trustees received candidate bios and resumes in advance. Mr. Bingham moved to approve the three appointments and Mr. Carbo seconded the motion; the motion passed 6-0.
Gabriel Luna was introduced as the new principal of Price Elementary School. Doctor Jean Fields, deputy superintendent, said Luna has 22 years in education and listed prior roles including instructional assistant, executive assistant in Richardson ISD, fourth-grade teacher at Floyd Elementary (Mesquite ISD), assistant principal at Shaw Elementary (2015) and assistant principal at Price (2023). Luna said he was “honored and humble” to accept the role and pledged to continue a legacy of equity and academic excellence at Price Elementary.
Brenda Gonzales was introduced as the new director of communications. Sabrina Smith, chief communications officer, said Gonzales joined the district in 2021 as bilingual communications coordinator and previously worked as a news reporter and producer for Spanish-language TV stations. Gonzales said she is “honored and humbled” to accept the role and looks forward to continuing district communications.
Trustees also approved Tamika Holman as assistant director of food and nutrition support services. The introduction noted Holman has more than 18 years of experience in child nutrition program administration, has served as a lead consultant at Education Service Center Region 10, and holds an MBA from Amberton University and a bachelor’s from Texas Woman’s University. Holman thanked the board and said she aims to ensure compliance with Texas Department of Agriculture rules and continued service to students.
Separately, the board approved probationary and term contract renewals for teachers, facilitators, nurses and librarians on a motion by Ms. Hornsby and second by Mr. Abbott; that motion also passed 6-0.
The hires will be reflected in personnel records and introductions to campuses followed the board’s approvals.
