Board removes School Health Advisory Council from district-of-innovation plan after state law change

After a state-law change, the Judson ISD board voted 7-0 to remove the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) from the district's DOI plan, restoring SHAC to an independent committee as required by Senate Bill 12. Administrators said the district had previously combined SHAC with district site-based decision committees under a DOI exemption. Senate Bill 12 no longer allows that coupling, staff said, so the board approved removing the exemption and directed administration to recruit and reconvene a SHAC roster that meets state requirements. Dr. Fields and other administrators described a staff plan to recruit parents and community members for a robust SHAC roster and asked trustees to identify which board member(s) would serve as the board representative; Trustee Macias volunteered to be a representative and said he would forward names of interested parents to the staff contact, Dr. Johnson. The motion reads: "Move to approve the removal of exemption for local school health advisory council from the district of innovation plan as required by Senate Bill 12." (Motion passed 7-0.)
