Godley ISD enrollment jumps about 100 students in early weeks; UIL classification update due in October

Godley Independent School District administrators reported an enrollment increase of nearly 100 students in the first weeks of school and discussed potential implications for University Interscholastic League (UIL) classification at the high school.

Spencer (Staff member) told trustees that “at the beginning of the year, so the first day of school, we had 3,231 students. As of today, we have 3,329 students,” and said the district expects transfers and additional enrollment to continue.

Assistant/athletic staff (identified in discussion as Mr. Flood) explained UIL classification is based on certified counts submitted later in the fall: “All those schools will turn them in in late October, and then the UIL will go based on percentages starting at 6A on of what schools fit in what category,” he said. He added that historical trends have moved classification cutoffs upward, and that the district believes its high school will likely remain in its current classification for at least one more rotation if enrollment stays near current levels.

Board members asked about the number of transfer applicants and whether the district is still accepting transfers by grade; Spencer said staff are monitoring capacity by grade and try to prioritize resident students. For families with multiple children seeking transfers, staff said they generally attempt to accept the entire family but may ask a family to choose if a specific grade is at capacity.

No policy change or vote on transfer limits was taken at the meeting; staff said they will continue to monitor enrollment and will provide counts of transfers upon request.
