Godley ISD finishes emergency roof patches, seeks contracts for larger replacements

Trustees of the Godley Independent School District were told on Aug. (information presented at the board meeting) that emergency roofing repairs at the sixth-grade campus and RB Elementary have been completed and that the district will pursue additional job-order contracts to finish remaining roof sections.

The district’s facilities representative, Spencer (Staff member), said the annex move for student and business services is complete and that roofing signage and other finishing work remain. Spencer described the completed roofing work as “fixing the emergency issues that we had with water actively going into the classrooms,” and said the repairs were necessary to have classrooms available for the start of school.

Leighton Ernst, representing DT Commercial Roofing, described the work the company completed: “We finished those up a couple weeks ago just in time for school to start,” Ernst said. He told trustees DT used a PVC single-ply roofing membrane on the repaired sections and recommended the same system for follow-up work. Ernst said the sections repaired represent about 20% of the roof at each affected campus and that the remaining portions use a different, built-up tar-and-gravel system.

Ernst said the repaired sections carry a 20-year NDL (no-dollar-limit) warranty, and DT will perform biannual maintenance inspections for the first two years as part of its proposals. Spencer and Ernst said the district plans to tie future work into the newly installed single-ply sections when the broader roof replacements are completed.

Trustees asked whether the emergency fixes were a stopgap pending bond-funded replacements. Spencer said they were: “This was fixing the emergency issues … that way we could have the rooms available for this upcoming year. But, that still doesn't address everything else that does need to be replaced.”

Board members also asked whether the patched sections could be left in place when a full replacement occurs; Ernst replied the single-ply sections can be tied into a uniform system during phase 2.

No formal contract award or bond action occurred at the meeting; board discussion and staff remarks described completed repairs, warranty terms, and planned follow-up proposals to come before the board for approval.

Less-critical finishing items mentioned included signage for the annex, increased welding-lab power supply needs and a safety light on a visitor stairwell that are being addressed through separate job orders.

The district did not present a bid award or final cost at the meeting; trustees were told additional proposals for Legacy campus sections will be presented to the board for consideration.
