Board approves policy allowing tribal regalia at graduation ceremonies

The Taos Municipal Schools board approved second readings and adoption of two policy revisions at the Aug. 6 meeting to ensure students may wear or display tribal regalia during graduation exercises without facing discipline. Associate Superintendent Reneta Mondragon presented revisions to board policy J-4600 (Graduation Exercises) and policy I-7450 (related student conduct/procedures). The policies were read at a prior meeting; the board approved them at second reading without additional changes. The revised language clarifies that students who are graduating may wear tribal regalia or attach tribal items to caps and gowns during graduation events, and that doing so will not draw disciplinary action. Mondragon said the intent is to allow students to honor tribal traditions during ceremonies. The policies will be posted on the district website and are available from the superintendent’s office. Board members voted unanimously in favor of both revisions.
