District reports growing use of wellness rooms and parent mental-health resources

Missus Barela presented an update on the district’s mental-health grant and wellness-room usage at the March 31 meeting.
Barela said 3,443 students had visited district wellness rooms from the start of the year through the Friday before spring break. The district has subscribed to parentguidance.org, offering parent coaching, monthly live "ask a therapist" sessions, on-demand courses and a parent coaching program. She said 148 families had engaged with the Cook Center website (parentguidance.org) and 31 families had signed up for parent coaching; those parents completed a total of 559 associated coaching activities.
Parents’ feedback included appreciation for being heard, help clarifying feelings, and support with issues such as medication adherence, anxiety and ADHD strategies. Barela said 35 families attended live sessions and some families have used recordings the program provides. The district’s SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) is coordinating wellness campaigns and plans to post mental-health signage in restrooms and other on-campus locations to promote resources.

Board members asked whether the federal grant funding had been affected; Barela said the district had not received any notice of disruption and staff continue to submit reimbursements as budget planning proceeds.
