District science adoption delayed by kit costs; committee weighing scaled options

Barris said the adoption process began with teacher committees in September and the committee selected materials for review; the preliminary K'5 choice for elementary was Discovery Education with a second option of Savvas, while 6'12 options favored Savvas. "An additional $300,000 was not enough to cover everything," Barris told the board, explaining that kit costs pushed the top-choice quotes above the district's available allotment.
Teachers on the adoption committee are evaluating adjustments to fit the budget: options include removing kits for some grades, rotating kit sets across years, or selecting an alternative publisher. Barris said the committee expects to finalize a recommendation within a week and will present adjusted cost scenarios to the district for ordering and implementation planning.
District leaders said the committee has been cooperative and sought creative solutions so that classroom instructional materials and hands-on kit experiences can be provided within the district's fiscal constraints. No formal adoption vote occurred on May 19; administrators said they will return to the board with a recommendation and precise cost figures once the committee completes its review.
