Dr. Schroed, presenting on standards-based learning and reporting work, told the board that Woodland CCSD 50 has been moving toward standards-based reporting since 2019 and will extend those practices to middle school beginning fall 2025.
“Instead, we will report on those proficiency levels,” Dr. Schroed said, referring to a 1–4 proficiency scale where 3 denotes proficiency at the standard. She said the move removes letter grades at middle school to better align assessment, instruction and reporting.
Dr. Schroed described supporting steps the district is taking, including memorialized guidance for retakes and redos, work on standards-based curriculum and assessments in every content area, a more robust functional report card for specialized programs, and adjustments for multilingual learners so language proficiency does not lower academic proficiency marks.
She said the district will use early-release days and institute days for staff training, that instructional coaches approved by the board will support the work, and that the district has updated web resources and held prior board briefings in 2023 and 2024.
Board members asked about the transition for seventh- and eighth-graders; Dr. Schroed said the district is coordinating communication with families and middle school staff and has consulted neighboring districts about placement and open-enrollment practices.
