Superintendent reports cell-phone study, bus thefts and solar maintenance review

In the superintendent's report to the Warren Township High School District 121 board Tuesday, district leaders outlined near-term administrative work on classroom phone use, bus security and solar-panel performance.

The superintendent said administrators will conduct "instructional rounds" in April to observe how cell-phone use affects classroom instruction and noted the district has discussed the issue with state legislators. "I was optimistic that maybe there would be some state level action—I don't any longer think that," the superintendent said, adding that any state guidance would likely be limited and that local policy will remain responsibility of school boards.

The district also reported a string of catalytic-converter thefts affecting district buses. The superintendent said the district lost several buses while repairs and replacements proceed and that the district is working with insurers. "This was probably some type of coordinated effort because it happened in a very brief period of time," the superintendent said.

On the district's solar panels, staff explained that an outside performance-services contractor recommended an annual maintenance inspection performed by an electrician familiar with solar equipment, and noted seasonal declines in winter output due to cloud cover and snow. The superintendent said some panels may retain snow during cold conditions and that brushing snow off panels can risk damaging equipment, so the district will follow contractor recommendations.

The superintendent closed by encouraging continued attention to these items and answered board members' questions about specific operational steps and timelines.
