Warren Township honors SkillsUSA qualifier, Chicano College Bowl and Science Olympiad medalists

The Warren Township High School District 121 board on May 27 recognized a group of students and advisors for state and national competition results, including a Tech Campus student bound for the SkillsUSA national championships.
Zach Pagan, the district’s Tech Campus coordinator, introduced Josiah Richards, the single Warren student who qualified for the national SkillsUSA championships in Atlanta this June. Pagan said about 18 Warren students reached the state level in Peoria and “only 1 of those students qualified for the national championships in Atlanta coming up this June, and that student is Josiah Richards.” Josiah described the project: “You created a video game. I think that stands for itself. But the concept is horror. Basically, you're stuck on an island… you have to find an object…and the entire time you're being chased by a 10 foot tall, tree monster.” The board thanked Josiah and his family and wished him well at nationals.
The board also recognized members of Avanza, the district’s Chicano College Bowl team. Advisors Luz Bravo and Lina Rangela introduced juniors and seniors who competed; a team member identified as Ozzy said the team “won the competition,” and coaches and students noted scholarship awards for individual competitors.
Science Olympiad coaches Jeff Olson and John Gray presented seven state medals won by students at McHenry County College. Students named and their events included: Inia Saravanan (entomology, first place), Soli Heller and Vandana (bungee drop, third place), Vandana (second place in “Red It Do It”), Safa Waris (second place in “Red It Do It”), Chloe Aldrin (second place in forensics with Soli), and Rohan and Abhishek (second in Codebusters). Olson said the students “blew me away at that.”
Superintendent Dr. Wiesman and board members thanked the students, families and staff for their work and for representing Warren Township in regional, state and national competitions.
