Board asks shared-services representatives to explore joint hiring, busing, special‑ed supports and software options

Board members named two trustees to attend a shared‑services meeting in October with representatives from Kearney 56 and Woodland districts and asked the delegates to probe practical coordination items. Topics the board asked representatives to raise include shared recruitment for hard-to-fill positions (bilingual counselors, social workers, speech pathologists), pooled busing or transportation coordination, shared special‑education service arrangements, consolidation or coordination of parent/teacher communication software, reciprocal use of facilities such as daycare centers and joint legislative advocacy.

Board members said pooling resources could allow districts to offer more competitive salaries, retain specialized staff and reduce duplicated costs for software and services. One member suggested the districts already share some food-service and Quest programming and should explore expanding those efficiencies. Another suggested inviting municipal partners and forest-preserve stakeholders where shared facilities or flood-control efforts are relevant.

The board emphasized that the conversations are exploratory, not a step toward consolidation or layoffs, and asked the two appointed representatives to return with options and “cliff‑notes” summaries to share with the full board after the October meeting.
