CFISD announces new school leadership hires, names director for virtual pathways

Cypress‑Fairbanks ISD on Aug. 11 introduced a series of administrative appointments and principals for the coming school year.
Superintendent Dr. Killian recognized Irene Ruiz as the new chief officer for school leadership. Ruiz has more than two decades of experience in education and 15 years with CFISD; Killian noted her prior roles as assistant principal and principal and her time leading community programs and early learning centers.
Doctor Meredith Akers was named director of CFISD Virtual Pathways, a program the district is preparing because of recent state law changes permitting virtual and hybrid course options beginning with the 2026-27 school year (identified in the meeting as Senate Bill 569). Akers told the board she looks forward to "building something meaningful from the ground up" and emphasized maintaining high standards for curriculum and instruction.
The board also announced two campus principal appointments: Carrie Austin as principal of Emmett Elementary and Natasha Chernigan as principal of Hancock Elementary. Both appointees described their priorities for their campuses and thanked mentors and family members in brief remarks.
The presentations included short biographical summaries, campus accomplishments and the appointees' plans to support students and staff. Board members and the superintendent welcomed the leaders and asked the community to join in congratulating them as the school year begins.
