District summarizes summer facilities work: chillers, boilers, flooring and playground updates

Facilities staff provided a summer projects update to the Grayslake District 46 Board of Education on Sept. 3 detailing building‑level replacements and repairs completed over the summer.
Jose Zayras (staff member) summarized projects at multiple schools: Frederick School received a new concrete receiving pad, two replaced chillers and a new asphalt pad for the Gaga pit; Grayslake Middle School had two new boilers installed and an art room renovation with new cabinets, plumbing, sinks and sealed concrete flooring; Avon received new LVT flooring and fencing around two condensing units after repeated tampering; Prairie View had a new chiller and about 300 feet of new 8‑foot perimeter fence added to the playground area; Park Campus had a rooftop unit (RTU) replaced and work continued on its outdoor learning classroom.
Zayras said many pieces of equipment replaced this summer were “end of life” and required replacement for reliability and safety. Board members asked about energy‑efficiency changes from the old chillers to the new units; Zayras said the district moved from single‑stage operation requiring continuous use to multi‑unit configurations that allow staged operation and reduced wasteful runtime but did not provide specific efficiency ratings during the meeting.
Administration said it will continue to update the district master facilities plan with outside partners including Premstar and Wold Architects and will present design work to the board at future meetings. No vote or contract award was taken during the facilities update; the presentation was informational.
