Itasca officials told the Village Board on Aug. 19 that they toured the new DuPage County Crisis Recovery Center and discussed how the facility and the national 988 mental-health number may complement local police responses.
Board members said the center expands services beyond prior county mental-health offerings and will include addiction-recovery services not previously available in the county. Officials said the county hopes municipalities can redirect some mental-health calls to the center or to county-contracted partners; the center also plans a mobile unit. The village noted operational questions about how to use those services when an officer would otherwise transport a person to the facility and about resource availability for Itasca, which has limited on-duty staffing.
The county's 988 mental-health number — the national short code for crisis mental-health support — was highlighted as an additional resource for residents. The village said the center is scheduled to open Sept. 1 and that county partners will provide details on how municipalities can access or coordinate with the center; a county representative will visit the police department for a more detailed briefing.
Officials did not adopt any intergovernmental agreements at the meeting; they said staff will continue conversations with county partners to identify operational protocols and referral pathways for Itasca.
