On June 24 the Hibbing Public Utilities Commission approved a $175,000 contract with Nagel Companies LLC to install roughly 2,950 lineal feet of 4‑inch public gas main around the Memorial Building to increase gas capacity during winter peak demand.
Mr. Peterson told commissioners the Memorial Building experienced low gas pressure during cold months and the new 4‑inch main would allow more than a tripling of the current Memorial Building gas load while maintaining service to existing customers. The commission had previously considered a 6‑inch line but staff and engineers recommended a 4‑inch main because the 6‑inch option was cost‑prohibitive.
A commissioner asked why the contractor’s bid documents said the price did not include rock boring. Mr. Peterson said soil borings were performed and that while unforeseen rock is possible, the borings and industry practices make a large change order unlikely. A separate question about initials on the contractor’s packet elicited Mr. Peterson’s “educated guess” that the signature began with a W and could be the owner, Wayne Nagel; Mr. Peterson described that as a guess based on the packet handwriting.
Commissioner Hart moved to approve the Nagel Companies contract for $175,000 for approximately 2,950 lineal feet of 4‑inch gas main; Commissioner Sandstedt seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote.
