The Story County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 9 approved an unbudgeted expenditure of $16,181.58 to remediate surface mold and to clean HVAC ductwork and surfaces at the county animal shelter.
Joby, facilities staff, told the board the shelter brings in large quantities of outside air and portions of that incoming air are not pretreated. This summer’s high humidity and some attic air infiltration produced surface growth on walls and HVAC surfaces. Tests returned late the day before the meeting and indicated the material was not hazardous, Joby said, but staff wanted remediation to prevent worsening conditions.
A remediation contractor will clean ducts and affected surfaces, seal attic penetrations, and add attic ventilation and pretreatment where feasible. Joby said no drywall removal appears necessary; the contractor expects about two days to complete the work and can perform it while animals remain in the building. The board approved the unbudgeted $16,181.58 expense by roll-call vote.
Staff said longer-term HVAC and pretreatment upgrades would be discussed during budget work sessions to reduce future summertime recurrence.
