Kindergarten center nearly ready for students; certificate of occupancy issued, roadway work and traffic plan remain to be completed

Jack Hayes, president of the construction management firm on the project, told the board the kindergarten center is “looking fabulous” and that major milestones have been met. He said the regional office of education inspected the site and issued a certificate of occupancy; staff expect classrooms and assessments to start the week before school for teacher setup and kindergarten assessment.
Hayes said most work is complete but a small punch list remains. He reported that the district has obtained a permit to complete the roadway work on Bloomingdale Road but that the contractor schedule was delayed after an earlier planned start date of April 15; the contractor has since moved to other projects. Hayes said the district is coordinating logistics for the roadway work, traffic management and bus routing and that the goal is to complete the work this fall.
Superintendent Doctor McHugh told the board a ribbon‑cutting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28 at 4:30 p.m. and announced that the Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center (GECRC) will be added to a memorandum of understanding to provide services at the kindergarten center and other district schools.
Project and construction details presented in the meeting included the $28 million total project cost; subsurface foundation work required 37 GeoPiers because of poor soil conditions at part of the site; and the district expects the building to be ready for students after Labor Day. Discussion versus action: this was an informational update; no contract changes were approved at the meeting.
